Building Decarbonization

FRESCo has completed dozens of research reports and tools on the topic of building decarbonization:

Active Project: Building Financial & Workforce Capacity for Deep Energy Retrofits

Hosted by LandlordBC, delivered by FRESCo, and funded by NRCan’s Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative, the Building Financial & Workforce Capacity for Deep Energy Retrofits projects strengthens the market’s ability to deliver deep energy retrofits by: (1) developing a standardized business case tool that turns incentives, financing, and risk management into actionable project plans; (2) creating business case for retrofits training and curriculum for owners, engineers, and financial professionals; and (3) expanding a building data/assessment platform to streamline early stage screening and opportunity identification—so more retrofit projects move from concept to implementation.

Dual-Fuel System Decision Matrix and Design Guidelines
Developed for BC Housing, this project provides a practical framework to guide when and how dual-fuel hybrid systems should be used in building projects. It includes an Excel-based decision matrix to identify scenarios where dual-fuel systems are recommended, high-level design guidelines, and equipment performance standards. These resources help balance energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability while supporting BC Housing’s decarbonization goals. A phase two for this project will be undertaken in 2026.

Electrification of Multi-Unit Residential Buildings

FRESCo, in partnership with LandlordBC, has released a report on electrifying multi-unit residential buildings in British Columbia. The report provides practical insights for implementing electrification, covering financial factors, cost drivers, and available technologies with their benefits and installation considerations. It also outlines key program, policy, and industry capacity-building measures needed to accelerate and scale building electrification.
